In the city of Turkmenbashi, celebrations were held to mark the Day of the Caspian Sea, culminating in the scientific and practical conference “The Caspian Sea — a Sea of Friendship and Peace”. The conference was moderated by Murat Atajanov, Director of the Caspian Sea Institute. The conference began with a welcome address from the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, to the participants. The event was attended by authorized representatives of Turkmenistan, ambassadors of the Caspian littoral states accredited in Ashgabat, as well as heads of international and regional organizations, including the UN, OSCE, and EU. In his speech, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov emphasized the country’s active and constructive role in advancing environmental issues in the Caspian Sea, particularly within the framework of the Agreement on the Conservation and Rational Use of the Caspian Sea’s Aquatic Biological Resources. He also highlighted the importance of the Caspian Environmental Initiative proposed by the President of Turkmenistan at the plenary session of the 78th UN General Assembly. The conference featured reports on pressing topics, including cooperation in hydrometeorology, protection of flora and fauna, and compliance with environmental regulations. Participants reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to close cooperation with Caspian littoral states and international organizations. The event concluded with a joint statement declaring that the Caspian Sea is a sea of friendship and peace, and a call to continue joint efforts for sustainable development and protection of its marine environment.
